Maria Reit: Legal Leader Driving VOSKER’s Growth

Maria Reit began her career as an attorney in private practice, but soon realized that working in-house let her touch more parts of the business. Before joining VOSKER in 2021, she held legal roles at BDC, Bombardier Aerospace, and Gildan — where she rose from legal counsel to director of legal affairs for IP, global marketing, regulatory compliance, and data privacy.

“What’s guided me through my career is always being an integral part of the business by bringing creative solutions and providing strategic expertise to help spur growth,” she says.

More Than a Legal Mind

Reit believes in bridging legal awareness with business objectives — and she leads her team to do the same. At VOSKER, her role has expanded beyond legal to include investor relations and corporate development.

“In my career journey, I’ve consistently sought professional and personal growth, embracing change and continuous learning. I focus on finding creative ways to support the business and contribute to the well-being and success of the people around me.”

The $60 Million Deal

When Reit joined VOSKER, a $60 million investment from GardaWorld founder Stéphan Crétier and certain affiliates was on the line. She collaborated with outside counsel from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to close the deal in just one month.

The due diligence process covered VOSKER’s financial structure, vendor and supplier network, and international sales and marketing data. Reit and outside counsel then drafted the transaction documents.

“I was impressed by the collaboration and business-oriented vision demonstrated by all departments involved and Osler’s responsiveness,” she says. “It was great to see everyone work together so efficiently to achieve the same objectives with the same level of passion.”

The investment also brought GardaWorld’s security industry expertise to the table.

Building the Foundation for Scale

VOSKER was founded in 2018 by Danny Angers, Jimmy Angers, and Yan Gagnon, who merged their individual companies to create solar-powered, cellular-connected security cameras that work where traditional ones don’t. The first camera sold in January 2019, just six months after incorporation.

Today, VOSKER cameras are sold at more than 7,700 retailers in nearly 50 countries, managed through an app with AI image recognition and real-time mobile alerts.

“We help ensure things close to your heart are protected,” Reit says. “Our cameras work where others don’t. The solar and cellular batteries allow us access almost anywhere.”

Policies for a Growing Company

Reit has been a driving force behind the internal infrastructure needed to scale:

  • Contract Signing Authority and Approval Levels Policy — Delegates approval authority for certain decisions, controlling costs and risks while keeping the company agile.
  • Employee Code of Ethics — Developed collaboratively across departments to ensure VOSKER’s vision is embedded in its values.

“This is a company that’s growing very quickly,” Reit says. “Part of that will be organic, which will still require a solid legal foundation to scale effectively and our support for opportunities in M&A and partnerships we are targeting.”

Data Privacy as a Priority

Protecting data transmitted from cameras to customers means navigating a complex web of international data privacy laws. VOSKER treats compliance as a competitive advantage to remain a pioneer in its field.

What’s Next

Reit has also been instrumental in improving internal processes, developing ESG policies, and strengthening data protection. As VOSKER continues its rapid growth — both organic and through M&A — she sees her role evolving alongside it.

“I’m part of an evolution in in-house attorneys because I’m relied on for my business insight and legal acumen.”

Ask legal recruiters what companies want in an in-house hire these days, and you’ll probably hear something close to that: a lawyer who knows the business as well as the law.
