APS Supply Co. – 35 Years in Concrete & Masonry

Reading Time: 3 minutes

APS Supply Company Inc. started in 1980 as a construction equipment and supply outfit focused on concrete and masonry accessories. Four years later, the company expanded into manufacturing, building a full line of expansion joints, including standard and self-expanding cork. Based in Beverly, New Jersey, APS now works with more than 100 distributors across the country, and its products have reached every state in the U.S.

The Lewis Family Legacy

Don Lewis, president of APS, grew up in the business. His father, Stan Lewis, founded the company alongside partner Paul Longsdorf. Don started working during school breaks, went full-time at age 20, and eventually bought the company from his father in 2009.

“Our clients stick with us because we are able to meet their needs on a regular basis. We pride ourselves on always getting the job done right the first time.” — Don Lewis

A Business Built on Relationships

Surviving the Recession

When the economy turned, APS leaned on its reputation and service to pull through. Don’s approach was simple: work harder for less, and take care of the people who matter.

“Those were times when I told everybody that we’re going to have to work twice as hard for half as much. We still took care of our customers and employees through the tough economic times and they have remembered that.”

That loyalty paid off. Customers and staff remembered who stood by them.

Pride in the Work

Don credits strong employee retention, rare in the industry, to a culture of pride and respect. He insisted on being treated like any other employee, earning his colleagues’ trust rather than leaning on his family name.

“I knew that if I was going to run the company someday, I needed to earn the respect of my colleagues. Earning respect is something that has rubbed off on all of our employees as well.”

He still keeps his office at the center of the facility, staying visible and accessible to both employees and customers every day.

Rebar Fabrication: From Add-On to Core Business

In 2002, APS started offering rebar fabrication as a value-added service. Within a couple of years, it became a full operation serving New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia market. The company focuses on commercial projects—schools, apartment buildings, parking garages.

“Our bread and butter work is the school projects. Those are the types of jobs that really fit our niche because there are a lot of masonry products required for that type of construction.”

APS continues to invest in new equipment and technology to grow this side of the business.

Looking Ahead

The company plans to keep growing by upgrading equipment, increasing production, and staying true to the family values that got it here.
